It’s time to ditch the concrete jungle and
rush hour traffic for some sun and fun at the best beaches in America. So let’s rent a car, or take
a flight, and find our way to places where all that matters is having a cold
beer and a nice, warm breeze.
1. North Shore – Oahu, Hawaii
If you were to close your eyes and think of paradise, North
Shore on the island of Oahu is what should pop into your head. This is a
surfer’s dream come true with waves that curl and crash with a relaxing
smoothness. And guests just wanting to find seclusion can do so as the beach
seemingly goes on forever in every direction. It’s the best of the best when it
comes to beaches in Hawaii.
2. Cannon Beach – Clatsop County, Oregon
Drive 90 minutes west of Portland and
you’ll find this beaut where lush forests and sandy fun collide. Cannon Beach
is known as an affluent resort destination, but anyone will love the cool
comfort and small town feel of the area. The sand almost looks like glass when
hit by the tides from the Pacific Ocean while the forest behind you acts almost
like a wall to block out the real world.
3. Fort Lauderdale Beach, Fort Lauderdale,
Florida
Fort Lauderdale Beach remains
one of the top destinations for spring breakers, but it’s perfect for families.
The huge expanses of sand and activities like jet skiing make the Atlantic so
inviting. And if you want a bite to eat or just buy a bobble for a souvenir for
the folks back home can do it on neighboring A1A.
4. Siesta Key Beach – Siesta Key, Florida
A short drive from Sarasota is
Siesta Key Beach, where the world just seems to melt away. The Gulf of Mexico
treats this stretch of sand that looks like powdered sugar so gently, that kids
can frolic with moderate parental supervision on the many sand bars. And
snorkelers will find plenty to see underwater with coral and sea life swimming
about.
5. Cape Cod –
Massachusetts
Cape Cod Bay got its shape from retreating glaciers, which makes
me feel like we owe someone (Mother Nature’s my guess) a “thank you.” This area
has been popular with politicos for as long as I can remember is just gorgeous
for a bike ride or just sitting down and relaxing. If you’re lucky, you can
occasionally see a whale out in the distance.
6. South Beach – Miami Beach, Florida
If you’re looking to keep an eye on gorgeous people with an
ocean view, then South Beach is the only place to go. Many know the area as the
place to see and be seen, yet the common beachgoer will love just relaxing here
as the day goes by. And if you’re feeling froggy, nightlife on South Beach is
an insane experience.
7. Laguna Beach –California
There’s 20 miles worth of California beachfront south of Los Angeles that
always looks like it’s never been seen by anyone until you reach it. The
Pacific is already picturesque in its own right, but to see it with all sorts
of coves to check out. A solid place to relax is 1,000 Steps Beach, where the
locals go to get away from the rest of the world.
8. Outer Banks – Outer Banks, North Carolina
This collection of barrier islands off the North Carolina coast is a favorite because it
features some good surfing, but still calm enough so everyone in the family can
have fun. It hasn’t been overly developed as you usually see for a tourist
attraction, so you can get some brilliant unobstructed photos.
9. Sand Beach – Acadia National Park, Maine
Beaches don’t always have to be the bake-under-the-sun variety.
Acadia National Park’s Sand Beach in Maineis a great
example of being relaxing while still being active. The biting waters of the
north Atlantic provide a brisk swim in this spot that’s nestled between the
granite mountains of Mount Desert Island. But what makes this spot so great are
the hiking trails that let you take in the park’s beauty and enjoy the
tranquility of it all.
10. Hilton Head– Hilton Head, South Carolina
This is one of the big beach destinations for people on the east
coast that want a pristine beach, but a little bit of luxury to boot. The
amount of activities to do in Hilton Head are
plentiful for everyone in the family. Golfers have 26 course to choose from,
while the shopping and dining options are top notch.
